Topic: Folly Of Idol Worship [Friday March 25, 2016]

Text: Jeremiah 10:1-5

Key Verse: “They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be born e, because they cannot go. Bern not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good” (Jeremiah 10:5).

St. Augustine wrote in the 4th century that: “Idolatry is worshiping anything that ought to be used or using anything that ought to be worshiped”. With this definition, education, beauty in whatever form, money, etc. , can become an idol. Technology, certainly, is a major idol of the modern society. Even the church and religion can be an idol.

These are gifts of God, means to an end, but idolatrous when made ends in themselves. From our text, the Lord warned His people against the practice of idolatry. Speaking through Prophet Jeremiah, He told them not to learn the ways of the heathen nations around them who are in the habit of observing extraordinary appearances like eclipses and comets as indications of calamities on earth.

They also worship carved and molten images which they carry about as gods. Jeremiah warned the Israelites against the practice of worshiping and bowing down before dumb idols which cannot save. Idolatry has been with mankind almost from the creation of the world. Man has always craved for things to worship, signs to observe with almost everything, including animals, reptiles, birds and insects becoming objects of veneration and worship. Unfortunately, some churches encourage the worship of images of saints – though they provide laughable reasons for their teachings. The Bible however, roundly condemns it. Even angels of God are not to be worshiped, as seen from the teachings of the Scripture (Revelation 22:9).

God’s word is very clear on the subject of worship. We are commanded to worship God in the very first of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:2-6). Jesus said in Matthew 4:10, “. . . thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve”.

Thought for the day: Idolatry is a mole hill erected on lies.
