Text: Luke 7:19-30

Key Verse: “Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached” (Luke 7:22).

Years ago, a woman became distraught because she had no opportunity to serve the Lord the way she wanted. She claimed she could not work in the church because most of her time was used to take care of her large family. But the Holy Spirit let her know that she could testify of Christ to the people who made deliveries to her home. She did exactly so. It proved a great relief as the word of God was ministered to many who received Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.

Thereafter, she found immense joy in the Lord. Our Lord Jesus Christ led the way in showing that the good news of salvation should not be hindered by any means. Wherever He found Himself and under any circumstances, He preached the gospel. In the text today, He seized the opportunity of a visit of the emissaries from John the Baptist to declare the constituents of the gospel. John was in prison for standing for the truth and holiness. He sent to know if Jesus was the promised Messiah. “…Tell John,” Jesus replied, “what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached”. Jesus used John’s enquiry at a difficult time for the followers of John the Baptist to preach.

This is the sum of the purpose of Jesus’ ministry on earth. Every occasion and place was fertile ground for preaching the word of God. Preaching is not to be undertaken only in the church or on meeting days. It must be done everywhere. “Therefore, they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word” (Acts 8:4). God assures believers who obey the great commission that they shall return not only with signs and wonders, but also with a great harvest of saved souls.
