Topic: A Precious Offer [Friday October 9, 2015]

Text: John 4:1-26

Key Verse: “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

Aiden Wilson Tozer, an American Christian pastor, once said: “Salvation is, from our side, a choice; from the divine side, it is a seizing upon, an apprehending, a conquest by the Most High God. Our ‘accepting’ and ‘willing’ are reactions rather than actions. The right of determination must always remain with God”.

The text, highlighting the challenges of preconceived notions about social and ethnic barriers, particularly between the Samaritans and the Jews, reveals God as the final authority in all things. Prior to this time, the two nations had hated themselves to the extent that the Jews, while going to Galilee, would avoid passing through Samaria, which was a direct route. Instead, they would circumvent Samaria, making their journey twice the normal.

Jesus was not given to such animosity, especially as He came to break such barriers and bring salvation to souls. When He met the Samaritan woman at the well and demanded for water, she expressed shock because she thought Jesus would manifest a life of hatred and unhealthy rivalry, which was the practice between the Samaritans and the Jews. In the course of their conversation, Jesus offered her the free gift of “living water”. The grace of God which brings salvation is available to all men.

Believers must work with this mindset to reach every soul for Christ. In Jesus, you cannot trace ethnic, religious or tribal animosity. If it were so, the Samaritan woman would have been lost for ever. The grace of God that brought you into Christ can also reach other sinners if you dare open the bowels of mercy in you to them.

Thought for the day: God’s grace has no artificial frontier; it is available to all
