Text: Deuteronomy 6:1-5

Key Verse: “And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might” (Deuteronomy 6:5).

A young man had the opportunity of being invited to a royal banquet. It was the wedding ceremony of a king’s son. He however, felt short of the standard of the dress code. While other guests turned up in the standard attire, he was the odd man.

The host was surprised to see a man who looked odd in his banquet and asked him, “How did you come in here without a wedding garment?” He was speechless and was eventually thrown out of the banquet. The children of Israel at this time, were on their way to the Promised Land. God, through Moses, needed to remind them how they should comport themselves and what they must consistently do to keep enjoying the privilege of inheriting a land that “floweth with milk and honey”.

They must fear the Lord God, and keep all His commandments. Above all, they must love the Lord their God with all their heart and might. Just as God made a demand of implicit obedience from Israel, we must make ourselves qualified to enjoy all the benefits of serving the Lord by fearing and loving the almighty God. The passage emphasizes your “heart, soul and might”. This is the totality of the human personality. This implies therefore, that the totality of man must be given to God. One must not “visit” Him occasionally in times of trouble and need. God must be the central focus of a sensible man’s life.

Thought for the day: Ephemeral opportunities are often seized by the wise at heart.
