Topic: The Posterity of the Wicked [Saturday February 27, 2016]

Text: Proverbs 12:1-16

Key Verse: “A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.” (Proverbs 12:3).

Proverb is defined as a compact saying or question that expresses a principle and observation about human behaviour or nature and life. King Solomon is reputed to have spoken about 3000 proverbs and is largely credited with writing the book of Proverbs.

Young people and adults are to benefit from the many lessons and counsels in today’s text. It begins with the brutishness of haters of reproof. At one time or the other, reproof and correction become inevitable as without them society will become vain and proud. Righteousness does not discriminate between humans and animals. Our text posits that a righteous man regardeth the life of his beast.

This means that God’s way of righteous living includes kindness to animals which are useful to man in terms of companionship, some forms of labour and as food. Dishonest people who twist the fact to support the claims they make are likely to be trapped by their own lies. Retaliation encourages trouble and increases feelings of animosity. Our text, as well as the rest of the book of Proverbs, emphasizes the indispensability of wisdom. It advises us to develop our personal relationship with God on the basis of sound wisdom and understanding.

We are encouraged to work hard, and to understand that God views success as having a good reputation, sound moral character and a spiritual commitment to the obedience of His word and commandments.

Thought for the day: Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not go unpunished.
