Topic: Pride is Dangerous [Saturday January 23, 2016]

Text: Jeremiah 13:15-27

Key Verse: “But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD’S flock is carried away captive” (Jeremiah 13:17).

One of the deadliest effects of pride is that it shuts a person’s senses to good reason and blinds him to his weaknesses and limitations. It makes him think he is more important than other people. Such a person does not see any need to change his ways. As a result, he ends up suffering defeat and experiencing severe setbacks in life.

In his numerous entreaties to the people of Judah, Prophet Jeremiah warned them to abandon pride, listen to, and obey God’s commands. He urged them to humble themselves before the almighty God. He warned them that they were toying with the danger of being forcefully sent on exile as captives in the hand of a merciless foreign power. Their land would be stripped bare of men and animals, and left desolate because of their pride, arrogance and rebellion against God. He wondered why they were unwilling to change their ways, especially considering the danger that awaits them. He could not understand why they continued to disregard God and believe in the false hope that no harm would come to them for their actions. Yet, for their rebellion and numerous sins, God rendered them helpless and brought them to shame before their enemy. Like the men of Judah, pride still hinders people from abandoning their sinful and indulgent lifestyles.

They look down on God, just as they do to other people. They leave no room for God in their plans. Such people are so set in their behaviour that they lose the desire to change their ways. This is a very dangerous state to be in. The only option open to people in this condition is to recognise their folly and quickly repent, else, face dire consequences of their action.

Thought for the day: Those who shrug shoulders at God’s word will sooner or later, suffer bruised ego.
