Text: Psalm 46:6-11

Key verse: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire” (Psalm 46:1, 9).

Matthew Henry, an English nonconformist clergy, who is well known for his exposition of the Old and New Testaments, once stated:

“We have no sufficient strength of our own. All our sufficiency is of God. We should stir up ourselves to resist temptations in reliance upon God’s all-sufficiency and the omnipotence of His might.”

Our text aptly acknowledges the omnipotent attributes of God. The background of this psalm reveals that when other nations threatened the city of Jerusalem, the Israelites remained calm, trusting God for protection.

The psalmist acknowledged God was their Refuge and Strength, pointing out that He had manifested Himself to be so in the course of His providence in time past and that He had promised to continue to protect them.

The psalmist figuratively describes violent natural catastrophes like landslides, earthquakes, ocean storms and floods, commotions, confusion, wars, rebellion and revolution, among others as the heathen’s rage. He informs that in spite of what could happen, Israel was safe and they would continue to trust God for their safety.

Other nations could boast of their security in castles with high walls and iron gates. From previous experiences of how God completely destroyed their enemies and their weapons, it is always wise to trust that He would use His power to stop every adverse situation.

The Psalmist exhorts the Israelites, even believers today, to observe the mighty deeds of God, which brought peace to His people, as He destroyed the enemies’ weapons and put an end to wars. Because of God’s power, providence and gracious presence, His children should never fear. No trouble can affect them fundamentally without God rising up as the reliable Shield, Buckler and Defender in every situation.
