Topic: Stripped Of Honour [Thursday January 21, 2016]

Text: Lamentations 1:1-11

Key Verse: “Jerusalem hath grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward” – (Lamentations 1:8).

Many times, we are shocked as we watch men who had once occupied great positions of honour sank into disgrace and stripped of their once cherished prestige. This is true of some great political leaders and athletes.

As soon as acts of wrong doings are discovered against them, they are stripped of the honour they once enjoyed and led away to jail. Great businessmen, popular entertainment stars, former Olympic gold medalists, etc., have had all their glories and wealth taken away from them as a result of a wrong doing. Sin brings disgrace. Jerusalem was once the envy of the nations around her. She lived in plenty and enjoyed the special favour of God. But soon, she got carried away and lived in pride, rebellion and all sorts of abominations forbidden by God. She also ignored all the warnings and entreaties of prophets to repent and turn back to God. Because she refused to yield, God gave her up.

She was stripped of all that once made her proud, led to captivity and her land ravaged and destroyed. She that was once the envy of others was now despised and mocked by all. To enjoy our envied position of honour in the Kingdom of God, we must steer clear from sin. We cannot remain compatible with God if we walk contrary to His words. Sin has never added anything good to one’s life. Rather, it takes away all the good that he has. Examples abound of many who once walked in the path of God but later chose to go the way of the world.

They now live in bitter regret of their unfortunate actions. We must not be deceived. There is no pleasure whatsoever in sin. Don’t get carried away by its alluring glamour and damning satisfaction. Once entrapped, it sucks life out of the deceived. And worse, it leads to hell. Sin is both deadly and damning.

Thought for the day: Always remember this refrain: “Sin brings disgrace”!
