Topic: Christ’s Healing Power [Tuesday October 27, 2015]

Text: John 5:1-16

Key Verse: “Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the Sabbath” (John 5:8, 9).

Our text sufficiently reveals the power of Christ to heal any deformity. Jesus never isolated Himself from people, except from sin. He fellowshipped with them on a regular basis, at the temple, and also celebrated the Passover with them. On a particular occasion, when He went to worship at Jerusalem, He met a man who had an infirmity sitting at a pool called Bethesda.

It was generally believed then that an angel would come on a certain season to stir the pool and anyone who first stepped into it would be instantly healed. But this man had been sitting by the pool for thirty-eight years, hoping to receive his healing. When Jesus got there, this man became a cynosure of interest to Him. He asked the man if he would appreciate being healed.

The question possibly looked strange. Jesus possibly wanted the man to look at Him to be able to make his faith come alive. The man gladly accepted the offer and was cured immediately, to the surprise of many people. But the Jewish leaders, who ought to have appreciated the wonderful act of God became bitter, hinging their anger on nonobservance of the Sabbath. When Jesus later saw the man in the temple, He warned him to desist from sin, which probably suggested that there was a connection between his illness and sin. Clearly, sin is a barrier to receiving God’s blessings. Faith is equally important; without it, it is impossible to obtain anything from Him.

The reaction of the Jews indicates that it’s not everybody that would like to rejoice with you at the moment of your miracle. The man, in spite of the Jewish leaders’ attitude, did not hold it against them. This is equally instructive, that we should not have ill feeling towards anybody. Jesus is our Refuge and Strength; a very present Help in trouble who will always remember those who trust in Him.

Thought for the day: Jesus is our Helper and Healer.
