Topic: Little, Yet Deadly [Wednesday March 16, 2016]

Text: Ecclesiastes 10:1-7

Key Verse: “Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour” (Ecclesiastes 10:1).

Journalists are trained to look out for unusual events because such have more news value. Oddities easily engage our attention and appeal to our sense of curiosity. As is often cited, to report that “dog bites man” is a common event and therefore, doesn’t excite our curiosity and interest. But that “man bites dog” is odd and makes more news because it is unexpected.

In today’s text, we can find sparks of wisdom that will help to light the dark alleys of our everyday life. A major spark here is the truth about the high cost of unguarded moments. “Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour”. Simply put, a dead fly inside the perfumer’s oil easily spoils the perfume and makes it send out offensive odour. Likewise, a person that is reputed for wise and righteous behaviour easily gets tarnished by a momentary moral slip. The believer is the light of the world and salt of the earth; a peculiar person and God’s standard bearer. Much is therefore expected of him by “a crowd of witnesses” that watch his life everyday.

That is why a momentary slip by him will make a headline. If his “little folly” can send out “stinking savour” and cause much damage; how much more if he indulges in scandalous sin! That is why we are exhorted: “But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient…” (Ephesians 5:3, 4). Every appearance of sin and whatever is unbecoming of a Christian’s character must be avoided like plague.

If you are a victim of “little folly”, it accords with true wisdom to reconcile with God. If you have courted the wrath of the King of kings, penitently submit to Him today

Thought for the day: When a believer falls into sin, the camp of hell celebrates.
