BIBLE PASSAGE: Mark 10:2-12
2 And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.
3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?
4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.
5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.
6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;
8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.
9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.
11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.
12 And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.
INTRODUCTION: At inception of creation, God created us male and female. God indeed hates divorce according to Malachi 2:16a “For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away……….”. God is an embodiment of love. 1 John 4:8 “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love”.
MEMORY VERSE: “And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:”- 1 Corinthians 7:10
TEXT REVIEW: Mark 10:2-12
i. Attitudes that propel divorce should be put away into the home. Don’t tempt God.
ii. Divorce was never in God’s plan for our homes.
iii. It is one man to one woman then the two become one.
iv. God constituted marriage it should not be brought down by anyone.
LESSON OUTLINE
Some Flaunted Causes of Divorce:
1. Battering.
2. Neglect by the man to provide for the home.
3. Infidelity on either or both parties.
4. Incompatibility (Two hot-temper couple; non submissive wife, etc)
5. Hard drugs, Alcoholism, irresponsible lifestyle, night crawling etc.
6. Childlessness. Etc.
7. No more trust in each other.
8. Desertion by one party.
Why Does God hate Divorce?
1. God commands against it. Mark 10:9; Malachi 2:16.
2. It is not the plan of God to raise children outside peaceful Christian homes. Gen. 18:19.
3. God’s plan for mankind will not be completely fulfilled.
Does The Bible Approve of Divorce At All.
Yes, the Bible approves of divorce only on the ground of sexual immortality.
“31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: 32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.” – Matthew 5:31-32
A true believer is expected to forgive his or her spouse despite the avenue for divorce stated above.
SUMMARY: Divorce is not at any time an option
CONCLUSION: Divorce is traumatic, and so necessary precautions should be taken to ensure that the right choice of help meet is made. God is a serious minded being; hence He was careful and detailed in creating man. He is also a perfect God. Everything He created was perfect, why then do we make mistakes in our choice in our help meet? It is simply because we fail to involve Him. If we are truly His children then we should be perfect like Him in everything we embark upon.
ASSIGNMENT: State reason why divorce is not an option.
PRAYER POINTS:
1. Father, please give us the grace to locate our bone of bone and our flesh of flesh.
2. Father, please help us to conduct our pre marital searching through the leading of the Holy Spirit so that we can have a peaceful home.
3. Father, every plan and counsel of the enemies to separate me and my wife, please do not allow to materialize.
4. Father, uproot every tree of divorce ravaging our marriages.
5. Father,please create your fear in our heart permanently.
GOLDEN DIET FOR THE WEEK
MONDAY: Matthew 5:31. Father, help me not to be tired of my wife and vice versa.
TUESDAY: Mark 10:8 Father, please give me the grace to become one flesh with my wife.
WEDNESDAY: Mark 10:9 Father, please do not allow the enemy to destabilize my marriage.
THURSDAY: Mark 10:12 Father, please me and my wife the grace not to commit adultery.
FRIDAY: Matthew 5:32 Father, please send away far from from us, every spirit of fornication.
SATURDAY: Luke 16:18. Father, please do not allow me cause others to sin against you.
SUNDAY: 1 Timothy 5:18. Father, please give me the grace to meet the needs of my wife and also to satisfy her in every aspect required of a husband.
