Kogi State Government says it is working with the relevant authorities towards having a comprehensive rescue and evacuation plan in the event that the expected flood occurs.

Kogi State Deputy Governor, Yomi Awoniyi, and Chairman Flood Management Committee stated this after meeting with the management and executives of the expected nine Local Government Areas likely to experience this year’s flood.

Awoniyi said the various Local Governments have been asked to device means of sensitizing their communities of the expected flood, that will arise from the release of water from Lagdo Dam in Cameroun.

While the State Government, Awoniyi explained, is closely monitoring the rising of the water level, he however allayed the fears of the citizens, disclosing that the water is still far below the mark that would call for concern, even though the Dam operators, he noted, have started the gradual release since 26th of July, 2015.

While calling on those living along the communities anticipated to witness flooding to be vigilant, likely camp sites to house those that may be relocated if the flood occurs, Awoniyi explained, have been identified.

The Deputy Governor said it is the fervent prayers of government for the flood never to come again, even though the State government’s preparation to curb the effect of the expected flooding, he assured, is proactive and adequate.

Also speaking, Mrs. Alice Ogedengbe, Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency said all staff of the Agency alongside other stakeholders are working hard to ensure that the expected flood does not have devastating effect and are undergoing training to enable them cope with expected challenges.
