READ: 2 Kings 3:11-12

  1. But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may enquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.
  2. And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the LORD is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: James 3:1-18, Ezekiel 24-26

MESSAGE:

As a godly teenager, you need to be mindful of whom you call a mentor or father. This is because you cannot be greater than your father, at least, not while he is still alive. Luke 6:40 says:

“The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master”

Whoever your father is sets a limit to how far you can go in life. In our Bible reading for today, the only introduction Elisha needed was that his Master (Father-in-the-Lord) was Elijah. Immediately, Jehoshaphat concluded that the word of the Lord is with him.

Also, anointing flows from the top to the bottom; if your mentor has a questionable character, he/she would be passing a dangerous anointing to you. For example, I learnt discipline and holiness from my Father-in-the-Lord, Pa Josiah Akindayomi. His anointing was not polluted in any form, it was pure and graceful. Your destination in life will determine who your mentor should be. Therefore, ask God to lead you to the right person.

KEY POINT:

Allow God to choose a mentor for you.

HYMN: Lead Us Heavenly Father

  1. Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us
    o’er the world’s tempestuous sea;
    guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us,
    for we have no help but Thee;
    yet possessing every blessing,
    if our God our Father be.
  2. Saviour, breathe forgiveness o’er us:
    all our weakness Thou dost know;
    Thou didst tread this earth before us,
    Thou didst feel its keenest woe;
    lone and dreary, faint and weary,
    through the desert Thou didst go.
  3. Spirit of our God, descending,
    fill our hearts with heavenly joy,
    love with every passion blending,
    pleasure that can never cloy:
    thus provided, pardoned, guided,
    nothing can our peace destroy.
