BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: John 11:18-57, 1 Chronicles 26-27

MESSAGE:

One of the challenges of 21st century children (millennials) is covetousness. They want to acquire what others have for prestige or to fuel their lust for comparison. This has been heightened by social media, where people put up appearances, living fake lives and engaging in the unhealthy competition of social presentation.

Wanting what others have is not bad but being desperate to have it is covetousness. Some would even go as far as getting involved in crimes just to have what others do. This is not good. However, the Bible encourages us to covet only spiritual gifts. This means if your friend has the ability to raise the dead, heal the sick, prophecy et cetera, you are permitted to pray persistently that God should also endow you with these gifts so that you too can edify the Body of Christ. Unfortunately, children of God covet worldly possessions. How far have you been dragged into this unhealthy competition? Don’t throw away your salvation, peace and joy for the vanity of this world. Retrace your steps today in prayer.

KEY POINT:

Covet spiritual gifts and not worldly possessions.

HYMN: What A Friend We Have In Jesus

  1. What a friend we have in Jesus,
    All our sins and griefs to bear;
    What a privilege to carry
    Ev’rything to God in prayer
Oh! what peace we often forfeit,
Oh! what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
    Everything to God in prayer.
  2. Have we trials and temptations?
    Is there trouble anywhere?
    We should never be discouraged,
Take it to the Lord in prayer
Can we find a Friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrow share?
    Jesus knows our every weakness,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
  3. Are we weak and heavy laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
    Precious Saviour still our refuge,
Take it to the Lord in prayer
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.
