Topic: Honour your Parents [Saturday July 18, 2015]

“Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.”-Ephesians 6:2-3

I once heard a story of someone who after getting married, decided to keep all former nuclear family members at arm’s length. He wouldn’t relate with anyone and found it difficult to visit or give gifts to his parents, as he formerly did. What was his excuse, you may ask? He didn’t want to involve third parties in his marriage.

While it is unscriptural and unadvisable to involve a third party in your marriage, because you have to leave and cleave to be truly joined, relating with members of your former nuclear family does not automatically entail involving them in the affairs of your home.

Marriage does not exclude you from keeping a good relationship with your parents and/ or other family members. In fact, you have a responsibility towards your parents. It is your duty to honour them. The amplified version of the above Scripture says, “Esteem and value your parents.” By not caring for their needs and welfare therefore, you are being irresponsible; whether or not you feel they need the help.

Many marriages are challenged today because they have failed in their God- ordered responsibility to honour their parental relationships. In your honour to your parents lie your well-being and length of days. So, do not misinterpret your responsibility to and relationship with your parents, for involving a third party in your home. They are not the same!

Remember the Bible says, “Let brotherly love continue” (Hebrews 13:1); and it is known that love begins and develops on the platform of family. So, to show that you love God, love others and therefore love your family, you should show love your parents; your first earthly family. You have more to gain by honouring them so, start now.

Remain Blessed!
