LESSON INTRODUCTION: Just like earthly parents, our heavenly Father desires to hear our voices as His children. When we pray, He listens, then He answers our prayers. Prayer helps us to present our requests to God; all aspects of prayer involve communication with our CREATOR.
LESSON AIM: To learn the need for believers to be prayerful.
TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should be able to;
- Know that praying is a command.
- Know that there is an adversary.
TEXT REVIEW: Luke 18:1
a) Men ought always to pray.
b) Believers are not permitted to faint.
LESSON OUTLINE ONE: IT IS A COMMAND AND HAS REASONS
Jesus commanded us to pray always, not to faint, because praying brings;
(a) Fulfilment of the will of God. Matthew 6:10
(b) End to the advances of wiles of the devil. 1 Peter 5:7
(c) Answers to all requests. Philippians 4:6, Matthew 7:7
(d) Deliverance from the troubles of life. Ephesians 5:16
(e) Recovery of losses and reaping of the desired harvest. Matthew 9:38, Luke 10:2
(f) Deeper devotion and relationship with God.
(g) Access to divine direction in life and strength to avoid temptation.
LESSON OUTLINE TWO: YOU HAVE AN ADVERSARY
According to 1 Peter 5:8, the Bible says there is an adversary, the devil, and his assignment is destructive; he wants to hinder us from attaining God’s divine height. The work of the adversary is to steal, kill and to destroy. John 10:10.
To stop the work of this adversary, you need;
1) To be vigilant, be watchful to his tricks and manipulation. 1 Peter 5:8
2) To know his mode of operation, therefore be contented. 1 Timothy 6:6
3) To be at your duty post, don’t be idle like king David, who was idle and saw a naked woman that was bathing. 2 Samuel 11:1-4.
4) To resist the devil constantly. James 4:7
5) To allow him at all. Matthew 8:31
6) To deplore your authority over the devil. Matthew 28:18
Examples of People Who Prayed.
- The Church prayed for Peter. Acts 12:3-11
- Hannah prayed to overcome barrenness. 1 Samuel 2:20, Isaiah 38:1-8
- Elijah asked for fire to consume his adversaries, the prophets of Baal. 1 Kings 18:36-40
- King Hezekiah prayed for God’s intervention over Judah. 2 Kings 19:14-36
SUMMARY: The Church of Christ
is a praying Church, we must continue to pray.
CONCLUSION: When we pray we have fellowship with God and invite Him to handle all our challenges knowing that He will attend to all, Psalm 55:22, 1 Peter 5:8 warns us that the devil is always on the prowl to afflict us, the believers, because that is his business. John 10:10
