LESSON INTRODUCTION: Many people enter marriage without pure knowledge of what it takes, wrong reasons for entering marriage has caused many to lose their lives, careers, health, ministries, businesses, family members, though God said it is not good for man to be alone, but many are still alone even in marriage, may Almighty God give us full understanding of what it takes to be married and enjoy perfect joy marriage brings.

LESSON AIM: To make members understand God’s purpose in marriage.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should know:

  • What marriage is.
  • Man’s misconception about marriage

TEXT REVIEW: Genesis 2:15-18

  • Man begins with the mandate of tending and caring for God’s investment, Garden of Eden.
  • God instructed man not to eat what will cause him to be doomed.
  • After the instruction, he made provision for man’s companionship.

LESSON OUTLINE ONE: WHAT IS MARRIAGE, AND WHY MARRIAGE?

Before God made provision for man’s companionship, he started by giving man work to do, i.e tend and clear the Garden of Eden, many entered marriage without a job or a career that can secure income to cater for their daily needs, someone who has not gotten accommodation, still being fed by his parents or loved ones is also planning to marry, the first task is get a job.

  • Marriage is defined as one flesh, union of one man with one woman for one lifetime.
  • The first reason for marriage is companionship. At the beginning of creation, God saw that Adam was lonely and had no one of his kind, only one ranger. God categorically said it is not good to be alone, He wants you to marry, to have a worthy companion.
  • Some people marry for love, a desire to build a family, social norms, religious beliefs, financial stability, and commitment to a partner and the sense of security.
  • Other reasons for marriage apart from companionship is to stabilize porous and stormy society, to raise Godly children that have no behavioural problems, to create a safe relationship where there is deepest levels of intimacy and connection and help us to be more like Christ, growing together in Christ.
Can couples answer these questions, do you enjoy the company of your spouse, do you prefer to keep company with other people?

SUMMARY: God’s purpose for marriage is to be a picture of His love to a watching world.

CONCLUSION: When Christians understand God’s view of marriage and His purpose, they have stronger marriages, families, they grow as a couple, understand each other and glorify God.

WEEKLY ACTIVITY: Why did you marry your spouse for the married ones in the center?
