INTRODUCTION: The Scripture establishes two kinds of eternity: eternal life and eternal damnation (Revelation 20:6). It also establishes that there are “Books” and there is the “Book” which is the book of life (Revelation 20:12). This book of life is different from “the book of the living” mentioned in Psalm 69:28 which is earthly; a physical life, and not eternal life. This book of life, according to the Bible, is the same as the Lamb’s book of life (Revelation 21:27). God is the greatest recorder and rewarder. He knows those who are His and has their records. He also has the records of those who do not belong to Him (2 Timothy 2:19).

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. The “Books” Versus The Book Of Life
  2. Who Will Not Be In The Book Of Life?

1. THE “BOOKS” VERSUS THE BOOK OF LIFE

The book of life is described in Revelation 3:5 as the book containing the set of names of those who will live with God forever. At the great white throne judgement, sinners will be judged according to their deeds in “the books.” Anyone who goes for this judgement does not have his name in the book of life, and such is doomed for eternal damnation (Revelation 20:11-15).

The book of life contains the names of those who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus (Revelation 5:9; 21:27). Saints, who have laboured faithfully have the assurance of being registered in the book of life (Philippians 4:3). There is a proportionate reward for the works of the Saints (1 Corinthians 3:13-15).

Our greatest joy should be that our names are in the book of life. To have your name written in the book of life, you must be born again. Any “believer” that sins or falls away from the faith apostasy (Hebrews 6:4-6) and refuses to repent, will have his name blotted out of the book of life (Revelation 3:1-5). Heaven must be our priority in all we do (Luke 10:20).

2. WHO WILL NOT BE IN THE BOOK OF LIFE?

The Bible says that anyone who refuses to accept Christ as Lord and Saviour is already condemned (John 3:18; 5:24). People who indulge in the works of the flesh will not be found in the book of life (Galatians 5:20-21). The abominable, unbelieving, liars, sorcerers, idolaters, etc. will not have their names in the book of life (Revelation 21:8, 27). The apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 further states the categories of people whose names would not be in the book of life.

CONCLUSION: Being born again is indeed the prerequisite for eternal life, but we must work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12).

QUESTIONS

  1. Differentiate between “the books” and the book of life.
  2. Mention four categories of people that will not be found in the book of life.

Sunday: Romans 1:29-32 (KJV)
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Monday: 1 Timothy 1:9-11 (KJV)
9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; 11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

Tuesday: Colossians 3:5-8 (KJV)
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

Wednesday: Luke 10:20 (KJV)
Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

Thursday: Revelation 20:11-15 (KJV)
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Friday: Revelation 5:9; 21:27 (KJV)
Revelation 5:9 – And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
Revelation 21:27 – And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Saturday: 1 Corinthians 3:13-15 (KJV)
13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. 14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention two (2) sets of people who will have their names in the book of life (5×2=10 Marks).
