PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The Assistant Teacher should review the previous week’s lesson with particular attention to the lesson outline.
MEMORY VERSE: There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. – Galatians 3:28 (KJV)
BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 12:13-14 (KJV)
13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
14 For the body is not one member, but many.
INTRODUCTION: Diversity refers to the inclusion of people from various social, ethnic, racial, and gender backgrounds. In a world filled with differences in culture, ethnicity, language, and traditions, it can be easy to allow these differences to divide us. However, the Bible teaches us that diversity is part of God’s beautiful design, as He created people in different ways, yet all with inherent value. This lesson explores how we can celebrate the richness of diversity while fostering unity in Christ.
TEXT REVIEW: 1 Corinthians 12:13-14
The apostle Paul admonishes believers to see and accept one another as one, led by the same Spirit of God, though we may be different concerning race, ethnicity, language etc., which he refers to as the body.
LESSON OUTLINES:
- CELEBRATING DIVERSITY
- MAINTAINING UNITY IN CHRIST
LESSON OUTLINES 1: CELEBRATING DIVERSITY
A. Humans are created in the image of God, each with unique characteristics (Genesis 1:27), reflecting God’s creativity and divine purpose.
i. His kingdom is inclusive, embracing people from every tribe, nation, and culture, highlighting the beauty of diversity in His eternal plan (Revelation 7:9).
ii. The diversity of cultures and nations is a testament to God’s creative power and glory (Psalm 86:9).
iii. The Holy Spirit bestows a diversity of spiritual gifts and talents, meant for the edification of the church (1 Corinthians 12:4-5; Ephesians 4:11-12).
iv. These diverse gifts help believers grow, learn, and sharpen one another’s perspectives (Proverbs 27:17; Acts 8:26-31).
B. To truly appreciate and celebrate these differences, we must:
i. Love one another genuinely and foster inclusion (John 13:34-35).
ii. Recognising that our diversity is a reflection of God’s vast and beautiful creation.
CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Have you ever lived with people from other cultures? Mention one thing about their culture that you appreciate.
LESSON OUTLINE 2: MAINTAINING UNITY IN CHRIST
A. Though we are diverse in many ways, our redemption in Christ unites us as one body, with each member playing a vital role (1 Corinthians 12:12).
i. This unity is rooted in our shared faith in Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:4-6; Philippians 2:1-2).
ii. As Christians, we are called to actively pursue peace and reconciliation across differences, striving for harmony (Romans 12:18; Matthew 5:9).
B. We must respect and honour one another, humbly recognising the value in each person (Ephesians 4:2; Philippians 2:3-4).
i. Serving one another in love helps maintain unity and fosters a spirit of humility (Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 4:10).
ii. Forgiveness plays a crucial role in sustaining unity, as it allows us to move beyond offences and focus on our shared purpose in Christ (Colossians 3:13; Matthew 6:14-15).
C. Unity also involves honest and loving communication that seeks to build up, rather than tear down (Ephesians 4:15; Proverbs 15:1).
i. We should encourage and help one another to grow (Hebrews 10:25).
ii. Cultural and social distinctions should never divide us in Christ; we are all one in Him (Galatians 3:28; Acts 10:34-35).
D. Ultimately, our diversity enriches the body of Christ, and our unity in Him brings us closer together to fulfil His mission on earth.
CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Share with the class how you promote unity and celebrate diversity among fellow believers
CONCLUSION: As Christians, we should celebrate our diversity, recognising that it reflects the creativity and glory of God.
EVALUATION: Mention two things you must do to truly appreciate and celebrate these differences.
CLOSING PRAYER: Father, help me to celebrate diversity and promote unity in the body of Christ.
ASSIGNMENT: Identify five practical steps you can take to build unity in your community (2×5=10 Marks).
SUNDAY SCHOOL HYMN
- O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
O how I love Thee well,
I am happy, it makes me glad
To rejoice at Thy birth. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Thy friend friendship suits me well,
Both young and will sing Thy song,
We long for Sunday School. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Christ was Thy first teacher,
The Holy Spirit, great teacher,
Does manifest in thee. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
This testimony is sure,
That God, the Father Almighty,
Poured His blessing on Thee - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Though the sun be so bright,
Or if the clouds be black with rain,
I’ll be in Sunday School. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day
I rejoice to see Thee,
Will thou pass over me today?
Without my being blest?
