2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

Bible In One Year: 1 Samuel 13-14, Luke 14:1-24

MESSAGE:

A wise person can be identified by his/her attitude to correction. Another way of identifying a wise person is by discerning his ability to give joy to his/her parents. Proverbs 10:1 says that “… A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.” Your ability to always make your parents happy makes you a wise child. One exemplary case here is our Lord Jesus Christ. He was a delight to be with at all times. As a child, Jesus was totally obedient to his parents. A child that completely submits to his/her parents, and obeys them is a wise child with beautiful promises from God’s Word to benefit from. Do you give your biological parents joy? To what extent do you submit to them? Or do you disrespect them because you are now in boarding school or the university? Today’s reading commands you to obey and honour your earthly parents. If Jesus were to meet with your parents today, can they say you have been giving them joy?

Making your parents happy or unhappy with you can make or destroy your destiny. What are you doing to give joy to your parents?

Action Point: Respect and honour your spiritual and biological parents always.

Hymn 4:

I. God give us Christian homes!
Homes Where the Bible is loved and taught,
Homes where the Master’s will is sought,
Homes crowned with beauty Your love has wrought;
God give us Christian homes;
God give us Christian homes!

2. God give us Christian homes!
Homes where the father is true and strong,
Homes that are free from the blight of wrong,
Homes that are joyous with love and song;
God give us Christian homes;
God give us Christian homes!

3. God give us Christian homes!
Homes where the mother, in caring quest,
Strives to show others Your way is best,
Homes where the Lord is an honoured guest;
God give us Christian homes;
God give us Christian homes!

4. God give us Christian homes!
Homes where the Children are led to know,
Christ in His beauty who loves them so,
Homes where the altar fires burn and glow;
God give us Christian homes;
God give us Christian homes!
