Topic: Don’t Fall into the Trap of Tradition [TREM Devotional 25 January 2019]

“And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand and called that place Ramathlehi” Judges 15:17, KJV

When Samson had finished using the uncommon weapon that God showed him, without any argument or equivocation, he threw it away. He did not keep it. Child of God the fact that something worked in 1960 does not mean that it will work in 1970. It doesn’t mean it will work in 1980, 1990 or in 2000. Check it out whether there are things that worked before that you are still trying to use. Always ask the Holy Spirit for fresh ideas so that you can stay at the cutting edge and remain relevant.

Do you know that I have been trying to see where I can buy an audio cassette Walkman because there are a lot of audio cassettes I bought back then that I felt like listening to now? But it is difficult to get, not even abroad! I sent messages to my sons in the UK. They got me one that is not so wonderful because the shops are no longer selling them. What they now sell are CDs, DVDs, and iPods. You can no longer find a cassette walkman. It worked then but it’s outdated now.

Beloved, there are ideas that worked and advanced what you were doing some time ago. You see, the fact that it worked then does not necessarily mean it will also work now. Don’t lay hold on something and not let go simply because it worked then. When you begin to lay hold on something because it worked, you may end up falling into the trap of tradition. And the Bible says that tradition makes the Word of God of no effect. People don’t like to change certain things or find out how best it can be done. There is always a better way of doing things. Search it out!

Samson threw away the jaw bone and he told God he was thirsty. God made a hole in the same jaw and put water there, and his thirst was quenched.
