TOPIC: Choose Your Associates Wisely (TREM Devotional 5 August 2025)

“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” – Proverbs 13:20 (KJV)

MESSAGE:

Beloved, while we are called to love everyone, we are not called to be closely connected to everyone. Friendship is a choice, and it must be made with wisdom. I love people, but I choose my friends carefully, because the company you keep can either sharpen your destiny or sabotage it.

If the environment you’re constantly in is negatively influencing you, wisdom demands that you step away. You cannot keep sitting with people who belittle your vision, mock righteousness, and encourage wrong living, and still expect to fulfill God’s purpose for your life.

Psalm 1:1-3 says: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water…”

Why is this man flourishing? Because he has chosen his association carefully. Your company affects your character, and your character affects your destiny. There are people you associate with who will truncate your colourful destiny. Avoid any association that promotes lust, sexual immorality, deceit, or destructive habits like doing drugs.

Remember King Jehoshaphat; he was nearly killed simply because he aligned himself with the wrong person (2 Chronicles 18). On the other hand, Abraham had to disconnect from his father’s house, an environment of idolatry, before stepping into the fullness of God’s plan. And the result?

Genesis 24:1 says, “And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.” And his servant later testified in verse 35: “The Lord hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great…”

Imagine if Abraham had stayed back in Ur among idol worshippers; his story might have been very different. Who you walk with matters. Choose your associations wisely.
