Reports emanating from Rivers state indicate that voting has been extended into Sunday, April 12, in some parts of the state after irregularities at some polling stations.

This was revealed by the resident electoral commissioner in the state, Gesila Khan.

According to Khan, the extension affects nine wards in oil-rich southern Rivers.

She said that in some instances key election materials were never brought to polling stations.

Khan also added that the results from Saturday’s election have been cancelled in other parts of the state after ballot papers were openly stolen.

However, she did not specify how many areas were affected by cancellations and so it was not immediately possible to estimate the impact on the statewide result.

Rivers has been marred with violence and has emerged as the key battleground in Nigeria’s 2015 regional elections.

The tension in the state has been fueled by personal rivalry between the outgoing governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Nyesome Wike.

According to Governor Amaechi, the elections in the state are a sham.
