Topic: Silent the Ignorant [Friday, 21st April 2017]
For so is the will of God, that with well doing yesterday may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men. 1 Peter 2:15
Everyone, at one time or another, have heard someone ignorant of the ways of God talk so smartly, and we sincerely desired to silence their ignorance. Some of us have actually tried to silence such ignorance by arguing with these “ignorant” folks, and in the process get ourself worked up and even more angry because we realize that, not only are they not comprehending, you’ve also been brought down to their condescending level. I Peter 2:11-12 tells us a way to silence such ignorance men: “dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.”
Now let’s draw out the instructions given us. First is to “abstain from fleshly lusts”. The Bible, time and again, tells us that “ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16); we should “no longer live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lust of men” (1 Peter 4:2); to “have no confidence in flesh” (Philippians 3:3). This is because the workings of the flesh are against the workings of the Spirit (Galatians 5:17), and since we are spirit beings, we cannot live according to the flesh that brought sin and death to us.
Second is to have a honest lifestyles. This is very important. We all must have heard the phrase “when you’re in Rome, behave like the Romans.” This however doesn’t apply to us believers, as scriptures clearly tells us in John 15:49 “…ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world…” We are further admonished to have our lifestyles set in heaven (Philippians 3:20). Hebrews 13:5 says “let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have..” Having done these, we know that we’ve shown our good works before these men, and because it is different from what they know, they would have nothing to hold against you, and their ignorance will be silenced.

Deliberately and consciously live a life of good example, that men would want to reckon with you, and glorify God in heaven.
