TOPIC: Holy Zeal To Do God’s Will

Read: Haggai 2:15-19 (NKJV)

  1. ‘ And now, carefully consider from this day forward: from before stone was laid upon stone in the temple of the LORD —
  2. ‘since those [days,] when [one] came to a heap of twenty ephahs, there were [but] ten; when [one] came to the wine vat to draw out fifty baths from the press, there were [but] twenty.
  3. ‘I struck you with blight and mildew and hail in all the labors of your hands; yet you did not [turn] to Me,’ says the LORD.
  4. ‘Consider now from this day forward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day that the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid — consider it:
  5. ‘Is the seed still in the barn? As yet the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yielded [fruit. But] from this day I will bless [you.’] “

THE MESSAGE:

Our text today builds on the preceding one (Chapter 2:10-14) which shows the people of Israel as unclean, and their sin was that they were selfish in labouring to build their own houses and pleasing themselves while neglecting the house of God (The Temple). God told them in today’s passage that though they claimed to have repented from their sins by laying the foundation of the temple, they would still suffer and endure the consequences of their sins for a moment (verse 17). However, following their repentance and restitution, their situations would begin to change for better. The penalty or punishment for their sin would eventually be removed and a time of peace and joy would soon come (verse 18).

As children of God, the difficulties and challenges that we face sometimes are the result of our disobedience and indifference to the work of God. For instance, financial hardship, debt, and business decline can be the result of non-payment of tithe and offering. Likewise, certain physical health challenges may be a result of unconfessed and hidden sin. The good news however is that we have the assurance of God’s forgiveness and total restoration if we consider our ways and return to Him in sincere repentance. Following our repentance, a moment of patience is needed as the time of punishment and suffering gradually winds off and we are fully restored (Acts 3:19).

PRAYER: O Lord my God, give me the passion to obey You and to do Your wish at all times, Amen!
