TOPIC: Forgetting The Lord

READ: JUDGES 3:7-11 (NKJV)

7 So the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God, and served the Baals and Asherahs.

8 Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years.

9 When the children of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

10 The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim.

11 So the land had rest for forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

THE MESSAGE:

The memory of the people of Israel seemed very shallow – once they came out of their travail, they easily forgot the Lord their God and served other gods. In our reading, the people annoyed the Lord and He sold them to the king of Mesopotamia whom they served for eight years. They cried to God and He sent them Othniel, Caleb’s brother, who served as Judge and deliverer. During his tenure, the land had rest for forty years before he died.

Forgetting God and His acts brings torment. When things are normal for us, many of us do not have space for God. It is only when we are in a tight corner – which most times we may have caused for ourselves – that we remember that God exists! Many treat God like a spare tyre which is not remembered unless the main tyre deflates. Thank God that His mercy is everlasting. When we get frustrated and cry out to Him like the Prodigal son, He comes to our rescue. He can raise people like Othniel as instruments He can use to rescue us. God can also use you as someone’s Othniel. Can you make yourself available as God’s instrument today?

PRAYER: Dear Lord, may You help me not to forget You and may Your mercy rescue me from every pit I am in today.
