TOPIC: Enoch Walked With God

READ: Genesis 5:18-31 (NKJV)

  1. Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and begot Enoch.
  2. After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eight hundred years, and had sons and daughters.
  3. So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died.
  4. Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah.
  5. After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters.
  6. So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years.
  7. And Enoch walked with God; and he [was] not, for God took him.
  8. Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and begot Lamech.
  9. After he begot Lamech, Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years, and had sons and daughters.
  10. So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years; and he died.
  11. Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and had a son.
  12. And he called his name Noah, saying, “This [one] will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD has cursed.”
  13. After he begot Noah, Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and had sons and daughters.
  14. So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years; and he died.

THE MESSAGE:

Here, notice the name, age at which they had their first sons, total lifespan and brief remarks about four characters. The lifespans in years are Jared (962), Enoch (365), Methuselah (969) and Lamech (777). The others had their first sons at 162 years or more, but Enoch had his as a “young man” of 65 years! Further, while others died at between 777 and 969 years of age, Enoch was “taken by God” at a “youthful” age of 365. But what makes Enoch outstanding is the fact that he “walked with God” for 300 years, and “God took him” (verses 22, 24; Hebrews 11:5-6).

What does it mean to walk with God? What did Enoch do that distinguished him from his generation? Jude 14-15 shows that he was a preacher of righteousness who warned his contemporaries against ungodliness. Though we live in an ungodly generation, we too can walk with God today! The first step is to commit oneself to the Lord Jesus Christ and receive the power to be God’s child (John 1:12); then continue daily in fellowship with God and His people, rejecting every work of darkness (Acts 2:46-47; Eph. 5:11-14). Like Enoch, we should also earnestly expect the coming of the Lord (Jude 14).

PRAYER: Lord, please help me to walk with You all the days of my life.
