TOPIC: Priorities In Prayer
READ: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5 (KJV)
1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;
3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
4 Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.
5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
THE MESSAGE:
Paul was labouring in prayer for the Thessalonian Church. However, his prayer concern was not what obtains today in the modern Church, especially in Africa. The content of his prayer included – giving thanks to God for them, remembering constantly their work of faith, their labour of love and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
All believers in Christ are required to pray. The issue is, what do we pray about? Many modern churches in Africa concentrate on prayer for themselves and material blessings alone. Philippians 4:6 enjoins us thus, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” Some of us pray out of anxiety – what shall we eat, what shall we drink, what shall we put on? And when we do this, we find it difficult to intercede for others or to pray for their spiritual growth, like Paul did for the Thessalonian believers. May the Lord help us to change our prayer focus!
PRAYER: Oh Lord, give me the burden to pray for others. Amen.
