TOPIC – God, My Employer
READ: Colossians 3:22-25 (NKJV)
- Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God.
- And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,
- knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
- But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality.
THE MESSAGE:
In continuation of our meditation on God’s instructions for Christian households, we focus today on employees. At the time that this letter was written, different forms of slavery were part of the cultural practices of the world, especially the Roman world; so, it was common to find slaves who had converted to Christianity from pagan backgrounds. God was challenging them to see their condition of slavery as an opportunity to showcase their faith as Christians. They were therefore instructed to be obedient to their masters in everything, as long as it did not go against the principles of their faith.
They were not to give themselves to eye-service, but be sincere and diligent in carrying out their duties. They were to always view their work as an opportunity for service, not to men but to God, knowing that God is the ultimate rewarder. Slavery may not be in practice among us today literally as it was then, but you may be an employee. Is your Christian faith positively influencing the quality of service you give to your employers? Do you practice eye-service in what you do? Do you grumble, murmur and complain in your place of service? Bear in mind that although you may be in the employment and on the pay roll of men today, the ultimate employer of every man is God. Therefore, do everything as unto God.
PRAYER: Lord, help me to do all things to the glory of Your name, Amen!
