TOPIC: A New Decree (Anglican Devotional 23 March 2021)

READ: Esther 8:9-11 (NKJV)

  1. So the king’s scribes were called at that time, in the third month, which [is] the month of Sivan, on the twenty-third [day;] and it was written, according to all that Mordecai commanded, to the Jews, the satraps, the governors, and the princes of the provinces from India to Ethiopia, one hundred and twenty-seven provinces [in all,] to every province in its own script, to every people in their own language, and to the Jews in their own script and language.
  2. And he wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus, sealed [it] with the king’s signet ring, and sent letters by couriers on horseback, riding on royal horses bred from swift steeds.
  3. By these letters the king permitted the Jews who [were] in every city to gather together and protect their lives — to destroy, kill, and annihilate all the forces of any people or province that would assault them, [both] little children and women, and to plunder their possessions,

THE MESSAGE:

In Esther 3:9-13, we see that at the instance of Haman, King Ahasuerus had issued a decree that all the Jews must be killed in one day and that their property should be given to those who killed them. After days of prayer and fasting, Esther approached the king to reverse the decree; it was done. Later, Haman was executed and Mordecai replaced him. Mordecai suggested to the king to issue a new decree that the Jews now have authority to unite to defend their lives and be allowed to kill anyone who may attack them. The new decree was written in the king’s name and circulated throughout the twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom.

Jesus did the same on the Cross: He cancelled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross (Colossians 2:14). By His death and resurrection, we are free from every evil decree against us; and if the Son shall make you free, you are free indeed (John 8:36).

PRAYER: Lord, please set me free from every evil decree against my life in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
