TOPIC: Don’t Fall To Advisers’ Trap
READ: Daniel 6:4-9 (NKJV)
- So the governors and satraps sought to find [some] charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find no charge or fault, because he [was] faithful; nor was there any error or fault found in him.
- Then these men said, “We shall not find any charge against this Daniel unless we find [it] against him concerning the law of his God.”
- So these governors and satraps thronged before the king, and said thus to him: “King Darius, live forever!
- “All the governors of the kingdom, the administrators and satraps, the counselors and advisors, have consulted together to establish a royal statute and to make a firm decree, that whoever petitions any god or man for thirty days, except you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions.
- “Now, O king, establish the decree and sign the writing, so that it cannot be changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which does not alter.”
- Therefore King Darius signed the written decree.
THE MESSAGE
Many leaders engage advisers in various areas of governance to give to them quality advice to make administration easier. Some of these advisers are meant to be experts in the areas they are engaged. Those that Darius appointed advised him to make a decree that everyone should worship the king alone for 30 days or such a one would be thrown into the lion’s den. Without asking questions, the king signed the decree. He never knew it was targeted at Daniel whom the king wanted to promote above the other officers-wicked schemers used the king.
The problem in many developing countries is that those appointed as government advisers are chosen on political considerations. Haman is a glaring example. He advised the king to sign a decree to wipe a whole nation just to settle personal score with Mordecai. Thank God for His intervention! Are you an adviser to government, community or church? What is the quality of your advice? How reliable is your advice? Can your leader(s) trust your advice? What motivates you to give advice – personal gain or to benefit the majority?
Let your advice be like that of Ahitophel-as if one had consulted God (2 Sam. 16: 23). As a wife, what advice do you give to your husband? Is it one that builds up the general family or one that brings division? Always prayerfully ask for the wisdom of God to excel in this big task.
PRAYER: Help me dear Lord not to be a wicked adviser.
