Topic: Planning The Future Under God’s Instructions

Read: Deuteronomy 20:19-20 (NKJV)

  1. ” When you besiege a city for a long time, while making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an ax against them; if you can eat of them, do not cut them down to use in the siege, for the tree of the field [is] man’s [food.]
  2. “Only the trees which you know [are] not trees for food you may destroy and cut down, to build siegeworks against the city that makes war with you, until it is subdued.

THE MESSAGE:

God makes provisions for both today and tomorrow. He knows that the conquest will occupy the land. So in the process of war, God gives the Israelites instructions which will take care of their immediate and future needs. For example, in the passage of today, He knows that the soldiers would need woods for siege and out of desperation, may cut down even trees that produce fruits. So in verses 19-20, He instructed them to preserve such trees. By implication, as He was planning to establish them in their rightful place, He was also planning their future, existence and survival.

The instructions and principles of God are there to give us an expected end (Jeremiah 29:11). Humans, out of desperation for earthly possession and temporary pleasure, can limit the plan of God for their future. They may cut short their lifespan, lose their purpose for creation, and ultimately miss the kingdom of God, if they would not passionately follow God’s instructions (however seemingly insignificant), for fulfilling His plan and purpose for their lives. Christians are admonished to watch out for pitfalls that can destroy their precious future and thwart that glorious end.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to follow passionately Your instructions, so l can fulfill my destiny in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
