TOPIC: Tips For Building More Trust And Honesty In A Relationship

BIBLE TEXT: “Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord but also in the sight of men.” – 2 Corinthians 8:21

As observed in the last lesson, in any functional and viable relationship, honesty is the foundation and the pillar upon which trust is built. It thus becomes extremely important that each party involved in any relationship endeavors to develop attitudes that can build trust and honesty in their relationship.

The first tip is to be consistent. This is the ability to stick to one’s words and actions. To build honesty in your relationship, you must be able to do the things you say you’re going to do. Building trust happens through actions, not just words. Therefore, show up when you say you will. Nothing erodes trust and builds resentment quite like empty or broken promises.

The second tip is to refrain from committing yourself to things you can’t do. Do not be too anxious and hasty to commit yourself to what you know you do not have the capacity to fulfill. According to Melamed, it is “better to be honest now and disappoint a little in the moment than disappoint later and erode trust.”

The third tip is to learn to prioritize communication. It is important to make communicating with each other an open priority in your relationship. Have a conversation and agree that you’ll both be open with each other about how you’re feeling, what you need, what’s working, and what’s not. By establishing this precedent, you make honesty easier to practice for both of you.

Another tip is to always lead by example. Getting a closed-off person to open up takes patience, not pushiness. If you lead by example, you can make your partner feel comfortable being honest. When your partner sees that you’re always being real, he will feel like it’s safe for him to be real with you.

To build honesty in a relationship, both parties must avoid being judgmental. If you are honest with your partner about how you feel and then get shut down or yelled at for what you say, you are less likely to want to be honest in the future. So when someone is being honest and vulnerable, avoid judging them or punishing them for it.

The next tip is to address the breaches. When trust is broken, partners need to direct real therapeutic attention to the relationship in order to rebuild it. Bear in mind that broken trust can’t be repaired with a quick statement of forgiveness and a warm embrace. The underlying causes for betrayal must be identified, examined, and worked on in order for betrayal not to resurface again.

Finally, give it time. It’s hard to force yourself to trust someone when you truly aren’t there yet. Work on finding ways to feel safe and secure in your relationship. Committing again and again to being totally honest with each other will be an important tip.

Beloved of God, being honest with your partner can sometimes be difficult, but it’s the foundation for trust in a healthy relationship. If you are struggling with being truthful and honest, the above tips can help you to build more honesty and trust in your relationship.
