When thou shalt vow a vow unto the LORD thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it: for the LORD thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee. Deuteronomy 23:21. Read: Deut. 23:21-23
When a purpose is unknown, abuse becomes inevitable. Many do not know the power vow wields, so they play with its venom. They make promises on a neutral ground. Every unfulfilled vow (whether to God, man or devil) have consequences. Many today make vows because others are making it or they are afraid of what people would say, thereby putting themselves under bondages. There are two kinds of vow;
1) Vow made in faith. To make a vow of faith is to be persuaded in your heart that God will supply whatever you’ve promised to redeem.The Shunammite woman said, ‘It shall be well. It is well. It was eventually well with her when her son came back to life. 2 kings 4:23-24. Faith-based vow requires strong faith in God’s provision. If you don’t have such faith, please, don’t vow. Don’t start what you cannot finish.
2) Vow made in fear. Vow made in fear is motivated by a sense of shame. Pastor announced a need and people came out to vow, because you don’t want Pastor or members to look down on you, you reluctantly joined them and ensnared your life with a vow you cannot fulfill. Must you ensnare yourself with your mouth? The fear of man ensnares fellow men, don’t make a vow under fear but faith.
* Don’t start what you cannot finish, if you can’t pay it, don’t make it. Be wise.
