Topic: Decency With Cleanliness [DCLM Daily Manna Monday June 11, 2018]

Text: Numbers 5:1-10 (KJV)

Key Verse: “And the children of Israel did so, and put them out without the camp: as the LORD spake unto Moses, so did the children of Israel” (Numbers 5:4).

MESSAGE:

At the time under consideration, the children of Israel, in their large number, were at the foot of Mt. Sinai. As it is normal with such a large community, there would be challenges of cleanliness, honesty and morality. In reference to cleanliness, it was not unexpected that they would have problems with sanitation when camped in close proximity to one another. Behind the laws concerning contact with the dead and lepers, there were certainly connotations concerning health and sanitation.

There were three specific cases of uncleanliness mentioned here: leprosy, discharges from infection and contact with a dead body. God wanted His people to comport themselves in decency and cleanliness because they were a holy people. Cleanliness and holiness were connected in the sense that if one violated the laws concerning cleanliness, he would be violating the law of God and thus, be unholy before Him.

The second sin was with regard to honesty. The principle that one’s property must be maintained by everyone within the society, was so that citizens of the society would dwell in peace with one another. If something was stolen, twenty percent was to be added in amends. In the matter of righting the wrong that was done, repentance was required, followed by restitution, which is still required today.

As children of God, we must not leave any restitution undone because that displeases the Lord. We must make restitution for unpleasant words said in front of or behind our brethren, cunning disobedience to leadership and authorities, properties and financial gains acquired through deception especially in the workplace, infidelity and wrong marriages, etc. However, it is important to seek godly counsel from leaders where the restitution to be done is sensitive.

Thought For The Day: Obedience brings a blessing.
