Topic: Wisdom Is Key [Friday October 30, 2015]

Text: James 4:1-17

Key Verse: “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14).

The strong pull of worldliness creates conflicts that are harmful to the growth of our faith. The pursuit of its pleasures produces covetousness, envy, fighting and arrogance. The believer’s only alternative is submission to God with a humble and repentant heart. This will produce a transformed attitude towards others as well. Submission and humility will help the Christian to avoid falling into the temptation of becoming proud, unjust and selfish.

In the passage under consideration, James points out that believers must make appropriate and judicious use of their short life while on earth. He goes further to underscore the need for them to totally handover their lives to God for direction, as self-management is destructive as it is not Christian-like. He also admonishes believers to tally their plans with the purpose of God for their lives. If you have been living without involving Christ to direct the affairs of your life, you can begin today. James also warned against the mad crave for materialism regardless of the source.

These days, some believers have embraced all means in their desperation to defeat poverty and make money. To them, the end justifies the means. Let us not forget that “a man’s life does not consist of the abundance of the things he possesses”. No matter how long a man lives on earth, there comes a day when he must bid the world good-bye. In the concluding verse of the chapter, James notes: “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” Let this principle be your guide today.

Thought for the day: Life is like a vapour.
