Topic: Obstinacy Is Damning [Monday May 23, 2016]

Text: Amos 4:1-13

Key Verse: “And I also have given you cleanness of teeth…yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD. Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel” (Amos 4:6, 12).

A watchful and dutiful mother looked out of the window on the snow-covered driveway. Sighting her seven-year old son sled into the street, she called him into the house and reprimanded him, “Danny, I have told you never to slid into the street!” Throughout the day, Danny heard the laughter of happy neighbourhood children as they ramped and sledded in the snow. When the day was almost gone, Danny pleaded “can’t I go out now mom?”

His mother eventually relented and permitted him. As Danny dashed towards the door, mother warned, “Remember what I told you about going into the street. Stay in the yard!” They were last words Danny ever heard from his mom. Five minutes later, Danny was dead – he was crushed by a car when he sledded into the street. The Israelites occupy a special place in God’s heart. He had pleaded with them in today’s text to obey Him and repent of their evil doings. He tried to draw their attention through famine, draught, lack, pestilences and premature deaths. Despite all these, they did not return to the Lord. Owing to this persistent stubbornness and impenitence of Israel, God had to come to the conclusion: “…prepare to meet thy God” (verse 12). And “who can stand before His indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of His anger…” (Nahum 1:6).

The Lord has no delight in the destruction of the sinner. If you have been resistant to His earnest pleadings, lovingkindness and tender care, even when He allows adverse situations in your life, it is to draw your attention. It is time to rethink and reverse from a life of obstinacy. It simply does not pay.

Thought for the day: The door of grace opens not in perpetuity
