Topic: Submission to Higher Powers [Monday October 19, 2015]

Text: Romans 13:1-7

Key Verse: “Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour” (Romans 13:7).

The world is filled with Satan’s inspired ego; the ego that rebels against constituted authorities and promotes anarchy and disorder in the society. At the time of writing the book of Romans, the civilized world was under the colonial rule of the Roman empire. Nationalists, zealots and patriots in many countries viewed the Roman authorities as occupiers, strangers and robbers of their nations’ wealth. So, they decided to antagonize and possibly fight off the Romans.

Paul the apostle exhorted Christians in all the occupied countries to have a different view of authorities. Firstly, “all the powers that be, are ordained of God”. Nobody seizes power behind God. Secondly, authorities are put in place to avoid anarchy and to ensure the well-being of citizens. Paul then cautioned against rebellion by Christians as it is synonymous with rebelling against God. Paul’s counsel resonates accurately today as many Christians, ignorantly and for tribal or ethnic reasons, will readily join in antagonizing people in governments. Christians are to pray to correct any anomaly observed in constituted authorities. We are the light and salt of the world. Christians are not human right activists. They are agents of the Prince of peace.

Believers must shun recourse to disobey constituted authorities whom unbelievers wantonly disdain. There is no power on earth that is ordained that does not have God’s tacit knowledge. Our stance therefore, is not to align with the bandwagon of evil doers and politicians. As the light of the world, believers must distinguish themselves through obedience to lawful dictates of government.

Thought for the day: “Submit yourself to constituted authorities”.
