Text: Isaiah 20:1-6

Key Verse: “At the same time spake the LORD by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot” (Isaiah 20:2).

It is futile to add to God’s word as adequately catalogued in the Bible. The Book is full, faultless and fortified with power. Isaiah was told by God to appear in public, stripped of his clothes for three years. He was to walk barefooted. This was a sign of humiliation and shame to an average man. Isaiah readily obeyed God, and carried out this divine assignment single-mindedly, not minding the social embarrassment associated with it.

History has it that Isaiah freely moved in the court and advised kings and the nobles. He equally identified with the poor, the lowly, the oppressed, the widows and victims of injustice and exploitation. God spoke through him to Judah and Jerusalem in the days of many backslidden kings and emperors.

The revelation of God in the Scriptures is not only for believers alone, it applies to both saints and sinners. God spoke through Isaiah to demonstrate the fierce and terrible humiliation and shame that Egypt and Ethiopia would suffer at the hands of the Assyrians. This message was equally applicable to Judah as a nation, that put her trust in other nations for help rather than in the God of their fathers.

The lesson for today can be summarized in the words of Apostle Paul, thus; “whatsoever things are written aforetime were written for our learning…” (Romans 15:4). God speaks to us through His Word to regulate our lives. Believers must always be ready to hear and obey Him even in matters that may seemingly bring shame, humiliation and persecution. God’s word can only be received and truly acted upon by those who are renewed. They are empowered to hear Him whenever He speaks and enjoy His manifold blessings.

Thought for the day: When His message comes to you, there is but only one thing to do, just obey.
