Topic: He fights for His Own [Saturday April 2, 2016]
Text: Joshua 10:12-19
Key Verse: “And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel” (Joshua 10:14).
In the battle for independence from Britain, the American army was facing near defeat when there was a miraculous turn around that saw the British army defeated. This was attributed by the founding fathers of the American states to the miraculous intervention of God as a result of the fasting and prayer declared in the nation to solicit His help.
When God fights for His people, He employs His array of natural arsenals to combat their enemy. This is what we see in the story before us today. To defeat the enemies of God’s people, Joshua needed the extension of the day. In answer to Joshua’s prayer, the sun had to stand still and the moon remained in its place to allow God’s people completely rout the enemy. This has been the pattern of God intervening for His people.
Against Egypt, He used different natural phenomena to fight the Egyptian monarch and his gods to a standstill. Finally, the entire Egyptian army was drowned in the Red Sea. At different instances, God employed hailstones, thunders and lightning, storms, draughts, etc. as weapons against enemies of His people.
Today, God still fights for His people. He has promised to undertake every battle for His Saints. Those who make themselves enemies of God’s people invariably make themselves His enemies. Those who attempt to fight against God’s people unwittingly fight against Him. And no one can battle with the Lord and win.
Today, as in the past, God’s weapons are still very much powerful and varied. And no foe can withstand Him. Are you facing any battle at the moment? Do the enemies threaten to swallow you up? Do not be afraid or cringe. Do not even think of surrendering to the enemy or turning to the arms of flesh for help. Just look up to God in prayer like Joshua did and if need be, He can still make the sun to stand still for your until total victory is won. Trust in the Lord.
