Topic: Cleave to Him [Saturday January 16, 2016]

Text: Jeremiah 13:1-14

Key Verse: “For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear” (Jeremiah 13:11).

Educators know the importance of using visual aids to help learners understand the lesson being passed across. In the past, this form of teaching was thought to be only relevant and appropriate to young learners.

With the application of modern technological devices to the teaching and learning process, however, this method has been found to have profound effects in the teaching of various categories of learners. God, the Master Teacher, had always employed this method in helping His people understand in clear and vivid terms, the message He is trying to pass across to them.

In our text, He used the waist cloth to show how close the children of Israel were to Him. As long as the waist cloth was tied to the prophet Jeremiah, it remained okay and useful. But the moment it was loosed from him and buried away somewhere, it lost its usefulness and became corrupted. How illustrative this is! As long as the children of Israel stayed close to God, they were at their best. But once they detached themselves from Him and got buried in the world of sinful pleasure and idolatry, their beauty became corrupted and their usefulness lost. They became good for nothing except to be thrown away in judgment. The lesson is clear to us as Christians today. We cannot survive without God. Our usefulness, value and beauty are only ensured and enhanced as long as we remain close to Him.

As we walk by His side and obey His words daily, we receive the needed vitality and grace to live, blossom and flourish. But once we lose ourselves free from the Lord to get entangled with the world and be buried in its sinful concerns and pleasures, we begin to die and decay.

Thought for the day: Our relevance to life is made manifest by our attachment to God.
