Topic: The Big Question [Sunday November 22, 2015]

Text: Isaiah 21:11-17

Key Verse: “The burden of Dumah. He calleth to me out of Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?” (Isaiah 21:11)

Asking questions has been a very important tool in the learning process. Without questions, no scientific progress would have been made from creation. Questions are asked for various reasons and they reveal the character of the persons asking them. For instance, the first recorded question in the Bible was asked by Satan from Eve: “Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” This was asked with an evil motive of weakening Eve’s faith and to lure her to disobey God. Such crafty questions abound.

However, some questions are significant and demand answers that may define our future. The question of the man from Seir, directed at the watchman, Prophet Isaiah, was significant and relevant, even to us today. “Watchman, what of the night?” he enquired. The repetition of the question accentuates the anxiety prevailing at that time. Then, the Assyrian army had subdued Judah and its neighborhood, including Dumah (Edom) and fear was on every side. The question then was, “What of the night [of calamity]? Is there hope of deliverance?” “The morning cometh, and also the night…”, came the answer from the prophet, implying that deliverance (morning) would soon come to the captive Hebrews, and punishment (night) to the Edomites.

The prophet encouraged sincere enquiry and repentance as the only means of securing an answer of peace. Today, the world is facing nights of crises. There is palpable apprehension. Very soon, it will be a glorious dawn of deliverance for believers in Christ, and night of severe punishment for the God- forsaking world. As watchmen, believers ought to speed up preaching the gospel to save more people.

Thought for the day: The big question is no longer “where’s the world going?” but “where are you going to be?”
