Topic: Laying a foundation of Obedience [Sunday 22 November, 2015]

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.”-Ephesians 6:1

There are so many seemingly “little things” that when neglected, create “bigger” challenges in the future. One of these is “minute” acts of disobedience seen in younger children. Some of these children then get too used to being disobedient that they disobey any and every instruction given to them. With this, they find it very easy to disobey God and other authorities.

The sad thing is that some parents even cover up these negative acts as an excuse for childishness or naivety. Little do they know that their actions can one day turn against them. If you overlook a fault from your child, that child will one day act that way towards you. Moreso, it could be most devastating, because he or she might perform such an act in public, which could earn you a negative name. This is why you must, of necessity, curb every wrong behaviour while you have the chance to do so.

The truth is: The act of disobedience in children usually starts with deferred instructions or unwillingness to carry out a task, and it worsens when such behaviours are overlooked or not properly handled. Yes, children are to be loved, pampered and cared for, but a key aspect to all of these is chastening. One way you can chasten your child to be obedient is to enforce it, whenever he or she acts otherwise.

You must understand that children need to learn the importance of obedience at their early ages. Give them instructions that they must follow, and attach disciplinary measures if deferred. Remember that the future of your child starts with you. So, you must do all it takes to mould him or her appropriately. No one derives pleasure from anything spoilt, but you gain honour when your child is well cultured. Receive grace for compliance in the name of Jesus Christ!

Remain Blessed!
