Topic: Impending Judgment [Tuesday July 14, 2015]

Text: Isaiah 19:5-10

KEY VERSE: “The fishers also shall mourn, and all they that cast angle into the brooks shall lament, and they that spread nets upon the waters shall languish” (Isaiah 19:8).

Henry Drummond, an English banker, politician and writer, noted: “If a man find the power of sin furiously at work within him, dragging his whole life downward to destruction, there is only one way to escape his fate – to take resolute hold of the upward power, and be borne by it to the opposite goal.”

Our text reveals God’s impending judgment upon the Egyptians because of their evil deeds. Isaiah pointed out that God would raise causes for their destruction from among them, which would be executed speedily, except they repented. The River Nile, which had been their succour in terms of irrigation for their farming, fishing and transportation through boats, would be dried up.

Many other rivers and streams in Egypt would cease to flow. As a result, the plants that grow in the water would die, as well as those that grow near the water. This would cause a lot of lamentations due to the adverse effects on the food supply and economic activities. The fishermen would weep bitterly because they would not see any fish to catch, while people who grow plants for material to make clothes would be helpless. The entire development would bring a great depression on them.

Today, there are those who regale in doing things defiantly, not mindful of the spiritual implication. They believe that since God is seated in heaven, He would not come down to punish them for their evil actions. Just as Korah, Dathan and Abiram, who contended with Moses, had erroneously thought that they could get away with their unruly behaviour, there are those who still behave as if they are the owners of the earth and that God would always tolerate their sins. God does not need physical bullet to punish any erring person or to execute His judgment. He has diverse ways of dealing with people and nations who choose to disobey Him.
