The Department of State Services (DSS) has given reasons why Boko Haram terrorists have attacked Yobe, Borno and Kano states despite the heavy depletion of their forces by invading federal forces.

The DSS expressed its opinion on February 27, 2015, in a statement signed by the deputy director on public relations, Marilyn Ogar, Leadership reports.

According to the statement, the insurgents are taking their anger out on hapless civilians and soft targets. Therefore, Mrs Ogar urged Nigerians to be security-conscious and watch out for suspicious people and movements.

“It has become evident that following the successful sustained air raids and intense combat operations by the military on insurgents’ positions in the northeast which have effectively degraded the capacity of the terrorists, its members are now in disarray and have resorted to taking out their anger on hapless civilians and soft targets. This development accounts for the recent spate of attacks recorded in Yobe, Kano, Borno and Plateau States, with intent of distracting security forces.

“Accordingly, this service wishes to advice members of the public to be vigilant especially in crowded environment and when travelling.”

The deputy director called on Nigerians to desist from boarding unmarked vehicles along the road and only use designated motor parks. She also added that the DSS had already asked motor park managers to ensure proper screening of vehicles, persons and luggage entering their premises.

“Similarly, we want to encourage residents of recaptured towns and communities to return to their homes. Also, there is no need for people to relocate from any part of the country because of the forthcoming elections as adequate steps have been taken by security forces to guarantee security of lives and property,” she said.

At the end of the statement, Ogar called on members of the public who have useful information to provide it to security agencies as it would help to confront the activities of terrorists in the country.

The Nigerian army has succeeded in recapturing several towns from the Boko Haram sect. Yesterday the Nigerian troops flushed out terrorists from Gulak, in the Madagali local government area of Adamawa state.
