Thirty five schools in the West Senatorial District of Kogi State yesterday collected the sum of N15million as refunds of 2014/2015 WAEC fee.

Prof Mathew Ajibero, member of the WAEC Reconciliation Committee, put together by the Kogi State Government following the suspension of the payment of WAEC fee following discrepancies in figures presented by the Ministry of Education.

The administration on assumption of office inherited a WAEC fee of N270million in 2012, but lamented a figure of N500million presented to it in 2015.

But after interfacing with the Ministry of Education, the Teaching Service Commission, and visit to concerned secondary schools, the total verified students that sat for the 2015 WAEC exams was 24,172 with the cost put at N276million.

The cheque presentation Prof Ajibero explained was in fulfillment of the governor’s promise for parents to pay and get a refund as well as curbing the corrupt practice in the sector.

The amount per student being refunded is N11,450, would be refunded to 24,172 students who were verified to have sat for the examination.

The committee would tomorrow present cheques to schools in Lokoja and Kotonkarfe, is expected to end next week.
