Memorise: “Let brotherly love continue.” – Hebrews 13:1

Read: 2 Samuel 1:25-26

  1. How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.
  2. I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

Bible In One Year: 2 Chronicles 7-9, John 13:1-17

MESSAGE:

The word ‘Love’ is often used casually and this ought not to be so. It is pretty difficult to define love because true love is a person. It is declared in 1 John 4:8 that God is love. To accurately define love, you must be able to define God correctly. After several years of walking with God, Paul said he still doesn’t know Him, and wants to know Him (Philippians 3:10). When you treat some one with respect, and you make them feel better about themselves by being generous to them and trying to proffer solutions to their problems, what you are doing is that you are showing them a glimpse of God’s love.

However, the word ‘love’ is also used lightly in some cases. For instance, Isaac asked for the food that his soul loves in Genesis 27:1-4. Different people love different things, but some loves are detrimental. An example of this is the love of sleep which leads to porverty (Proverbs 24:33-34). The love of food means that your belly is your God (1 Corinthians 6:13). The love of money is the beginning of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10). You must be very care full what you give your love to. Don’t let the things you love put you in trouble or even be the end of you.

Prayer Point:
Lord Jesus, please help me not to love anything to my detriment.

Hymn 10:

  1. What a friend we have in Jesus,
    All our sins and griefs to bear!
    What a privilege to carry
    Everything to God in prayer!
    O what peace we often forfeit,
    O what needless pain we bear,
    All because we do not carry
    Everything to God in prayer!
  2. Have we trials and temptations?
    Is there trouble anywhere?
    We should never be discouraged;
    Take it to the Lord in prayer!
    Can we find a Friend so faithful?
    Who will all our sorrows share?
    Jesus knows our every weakness,
    Take it to the Lord in prayer!
  3. Are we weak and heavy laden,
    Cumbered with a load of care?
    Precious Savior, still our refuge,
    Take it to the Lord in prayer.
    Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
    Take it to the Lord in prayer!
    In His arms He’ll take and shield You;
    You wilt find a solace there.
