MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional 14 January 2019 By Dr. D.K Olukoya – Don’t Be A Miserable Comforter

TOPIC: Don’t Be A Miserable Comforter (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries, MFM Daily Devotional 14 January 2019)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Job 2:11-13

Bible In One Year: Genesis 33-35; Matthew 10:1-20

MEMORY VERSE: “Judge not, that ye be not judged.” – Matthew 7:1

The MESSAGE:

The Bible calls Job’s friends miserable comforters. What is the reason for this uncomplimentary description? Though Job’s friends spent time with him during his trials and travails, they did very little or nothing to solve his problem or alleviate his pain. Job’s friends discussed, analysed and even gossiped about the possible causes of Job’s affliction. None of them prayed for him in his closet, neither did they gather to intercede for him corporately. Another reason Job’s friends were described as miserable comforters is that while God could flaunt Job’s credentials as the most righteous person on earth, even to the devil, Job’s friends kept attributing his ordeals to sin. Beloved, it is not every trial, affliction or persecution a believer faces that is due to sin. Job’s sickness and trials as well as Zechariah’s and Elizabeth’s childlessness, the apostles’ persecution are good cases in point. Job’s friends earned the uncomplimentary remark “miserable comforters” because rather than truly comfort Job and seek permanent solution to his travails, they only engaged in worthless blame game, roundtable discussion and gossiping. All these added no value to Job’s life nor improved his condition.

Beloved, when a believer has a problem or is passing through an ordeal, see it as light affliction (2 Corinthians 4:17). Heaven must have permitted it for a purpose. Your duty as a fellow believer is to stand in the gap individually by praying for God’s intervention in that situation. The prayer you pray for that person in your closet can move the hand of God on the person’s behalf. You can also organise corporate prayer for the person. Make sure that the words you speak to the person are seasoned with salt, encouraging, comforting, faith-building and soul-lifting. These are the words that will make your presence in the person’s life count. The words of Job’s friends lacked all these qualities.

Tale bearing, gossiping and blame game will not help a believer in adversity or problem. Wrong advice like telling the person to deny God or seek solution in ungodly sources is not the answer. Your constant prayer and intercession, godly counsel, words of comfort and encouragement, among others are what the person needs. Remember that when Peter was imprisoned by Herod and death sentence was hanging on Peter’s head, the Church rose to the occasion. They prayed and God sent an angel who miraculously delivered Peter from the prison and the jaws of death. Note that when the Church did not pray for James’ release, Herod succeeded in killing him. But when the Church prayed for Peter, heaven intervened, saved and released him. Also, Jesus perceived the agenda of the enemy for Peter and prayed for him (Luke 21:31-32). Beloved, your prayer is what counts in the life of a brother or sister facing an ordeal or challenge. Heaven will record and reward the quality time you spend in interceding and praying for that person as well as the words of encouragement, godly counsel and comfort you speak. Don’t join the train of tale bearers, gossips and ungodly analysts who add no value but only compound the problem. You will not be a miserable comforter, in Jesus’ name.
