MESSAGE:

Hero worship is idolizing someone. Unfortunately, this happens in Christendom today where a congregation reverence the ‘man of God’ to the point of doing things against the Bible just because he said so. Don’t get me wrong, it is good to admire a public figure or a man of God and even to honour the person, but there will be a problem when you give them the glory or honour that is meant for God alone. Worse still is if you disobey God to obey them. God is very jealous and never likes to share His glory with anyone. As a matter of fact, every Christian leader is supposed to point you to Jesus Christ and not himself.

If you’re in a Church where the Pastor keeps talking about how you should reverence him or give him gifts without any emphasis on God, if all he preaches about is sowing seeds at the altar to bless the man of God rather than giving to the poor as Jesus commanded, then you need to be careful.

No matter how anointed a preacher is, it is wrong to idolize him. I often tell my congregation that they should crosscheck every teaching with the Bible and whenever they find that I am no longer preaching the truth, they should discontinue from worshipping in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

REFLECTION

Do your testimonies give all the glory to God or your pastor?

HYMN: Lead Us Heavenly Father

  1. Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us
    o’er the world’s tempestuous sea;
    guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us,
    for we have no help but Thee;
    yet possessing every blessing,
    if our God our Father be.
  2. Saviour, breathe forgiveness o’er us:
    all our weakness Thou dost know;
    Thou didst tread this earth before us,
    Thou didst feel its keenest woe;
    lone and dreary, faint and weary,
    through the desert Thou didst go.
  3. Spirit of our God, descending,
    fill our hearts with heavenly joy,
    love with every passion blending,
    pleasure that can never cloy:
    thus provided, pardoned, guided,
    nothing can our peace destroy.
