Topic: Holding On To “You”

“But by the grace of God I am what I am…” – 1 Corinthians 15:10

I read a quote once that said, “What is really hard and amazing is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself.” I would like to rephrase that by saying, “you have to give up the strong desire to please others by developing yourself to become a better you rather than who you think they want you to be”.

Have you ever felt like becoming a Pastor’s wife might take away from your true identity or make you only a shadow of who you truly are? True to this, certain offices or assignments are said to, by human standards, possess a certain pattern of living: expectations of how you must carry yourself or even speak always will be there; but you must not lose “you” in the process.

There is a “you” that brings out the uniqueness you possess; the aspect of you that makes you different from everyone else. That’s what people relate with and can be called your personality. You must not lose that. In all that is required of you, you should be able to appreciate yourself for who you are and what God has made of you. If you find it difficult to do this, you probably are living a false life and would likely not find the inner joy you desire.

So, what I would propose to you today is to evaluate yourself. Meditate on whether or not you have been you or someone else all along. Remember, we are peculiar to ourselves and no matter how much you imitate someone else, you can never become that person. It is the you that God wants you to be, develop, nurture with His Word and use so as to impart other lives. Therefore, when next you carry out that assignment, teaching, seminar or outreach, remember God has placed in you a unique potential to carry it out in a way distinct from others and you will still be right in His eyes. Don’t lose the “you” touch!

Remain blessed!
